The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has just announced their new Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study Web site. The ACE study is very compelling, and it is an ongoing collaborative study between CDC and Kaiser Permanente's Department of Preventive Medicine in San Diego, California. The study examines the possible effects that adverse childhood experiences can have on numerous public health, social, and individual medical problems across the life stages, and has already established a link between adverse childhood experiences and development of chronic illnesses throughout the life stages. The Web site makes easily available information about the study's findings, links to ACE Study publications, provides access to ACE Study questionnaires, and has general information about the study. Teens rate teasing and bullying as "big problems" that rank higher than racism, AIDS, and the pressure to have sex or try alcohol or other drugs?

Academic problems due to bullying are reported by 22% of 4th - 8th graders?

Almost 75% of children have been victims of bullying during school?

Half of parents see bullying as no problem for their children?
Bullying is a big problem. It is not solved by any one entity. Parents, the community and schools all need to work cooperatively to help solve a problem that no child should experience. The bully, the bullied, and the bystander who observes bullying all need to be considered in prevention. Bullying can be both physical as well as verbal and emotional. It can also be relational which is an indirect, hidden kind of bullying. Examples could include excluding someone or telling lies about the person.

There are two new studies available regarding media use. The first is a study by Pew Internet & American Life Project, “Teens, Privacy & Online Social Networks.” Some key findings:
55% of online teens have profiles online. Of those with profiles, 46% give false information as a means to protect themselves, but also to be playful and silly.
32% of online teens have been contacted by strangers online

The program is called “Surge Support Child Care Services”. The program brochure explains, “Family members of Minnesota’s deployed Army National Guard and Reserve receive up to two days of Surge Support Child Care per month, for up to six months. There is no cost to the family members for using the Surge Support Child Care Services. Depending on which Surge Support Child Care Service is chosen, family members may need to complete a free assistance application in order to the child care provider to receive compensation from the national Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies.” Families / Service Providers can learn more by calling 1-888-291-9811 to request referrals of participating child care providers. Parent Chronicles: As part of its continuing Parent Chronicles initiative, the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign has developed a new set of action items and quiz questions that encourage parents to further explore their teens' lives and help bridge the generation gap. Many parents are in the dark when it comes to their teen's world – they don't understand the lingo, the pressures they face, or even how their child relates to his/her peers. Learning more about their teen's world helps parents better communicate and relate to their child. With the launch of Parent Chronicles the campaign encouraged parents to take a glimpse into today's teen culture including what's happening on the Web. Upon completion of these action items, parents joined one another online to share their thoughts on our parent-to-parent forum. The campaign encourages parents to keep returning to the forum and chronicling their experiences as they dive into the world of teens.
